Hillwalking : Wester Ross is well known for its spectacular mountains, particularly in Torridon. The Coigach peaks to the north of Ullapool are equally impressive, particularly the famous peak of Stac Pollaidh.

There are many schemes in place or being developed to both protect the environment and make better use of the natural resources of the area. The complex geology of Knockan Crag in Assynt (which has a visitors' centre), part of the North West Highland Geopark, attracts enthusiasts from all over the world and magnificent mountains such as Suilven and Quinag are a paradise for hillwalkers.

Ullapool : The cottage is a forty minute drive from the fishing port of Ullapool. Situated on the shores of Lochbroom Ullapool has all the amenities one could wish for. There is a network of easy walking routes around Ullapool hill which offer impressive views of Lochbroom and the Summer Isles. There are numerous restaurants and cafés, a library and a Leisure Centre with two outdoor tennis courts plus indoor short tennis and badminton; indoor climbing wall; fitness room; sauna and a heated indoor swimming pool – the pool timetables children's sessions with water toys and floats. The centre also offers pilates, yoga and keep fit, and during school holidays often installs an indoor bouncy castle and soft play area.

Ullapool is also the ferry terminal to the Lewis and the Western Isles. Ferries run twice daily throughout the year.

Eating Out : You don't need to go to Ullapool to enjoy an evening out. The Summer Isles Hotel provides bar meals as does the Fuaran Bar. Both are withing walking distance of the cottage. On the menu are Scallops, lobsters, langoustines, crabs, halibut, turbot, salmon, venison, big brown eggs, wholesome brown bread fresh from the oven.

Ullapool Entertainment : Most of the local bars and hotels regularly stage live music from traditional Scottish to contemporary. Every few weeks the Screen Machine, a travelling cinema will show the latest films. Concerts and events are held in the village hall, and visiting music, dance and theatre companies perform at the Macphail Centre theatre and other venues.

Cruises : Boat trips depart from Ullapool and Achiltibuie for the Summer Isles. From Achiltibuie the Hectoria, a converted trawler, takes visitors to the seal colonies around the Summer Isles. Departure times are available from the Tourist information office in Ullapool. There are wildlife cruises at Loch Laxford and Kylesku - to see the highest waterfall in Britain at Eas a Chual Aluinn.

Bird Watching : Handa Island is a Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve and a ten-minute crossing from Tarbet. In the breeding season (from May to August) the sky is full of Arctic and great skuas, puffins and guilliemots.

Arts & Crafts : In addition to the many craft shops in the area you can make an advance booking for one of the many arts and craft courses that are held in Ullapool throughout the year. To view some of the courses on offer visit Wildtiles, Bridge House Art and an talla solais. There is also an annual poetry & creative writing course on Tanera Mor, the largest of the Summer Isles.

Fishing : Evening sea fishing trips available on request to the Summer Isles Hotel. Permits are also available to fish the many local hill lochs for brown trout. You can also fish for mackerel from Badentarbet pier, mackerel fishing is particularly good in Sept/October.

Sport : There are many things to do. With hardly any traffic the Coigach peninsula is very suited to walking, running and cycling. There is a 10 mile circular route round the peninsula that takes in some impressive views of the Summer Isles to the West. The cliffs at Rheiff are a popular destination for rock-climbers. There is also sailing at Tanera and you could explore the Summer Isles in a sea-kayak.
